چکیده

We report the results from a systematic search for molecular (OH 119 μm) outflows with Herschel-PACS in a sample of 43 nearby (z < 0.3) galaxy mergers, mostly ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and QSOs. We find that the character of the OH feature (strength of the absorption relative to the emission) correlates with that of the 9.7-μm silicate feature, a measure of obscuration in ULIRGs. Unambiguous evidence for molecular outflows, based on the detection of OH absorption profiles with median velocities more blueshifted than −50 km Department of Astronomy, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742, USA; [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Joint Space-Science Institute, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742, USA Max-Planck-Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE), Giessenbachstrae 1, 85748 Garching, Germany Naval Research Laboratory, Remote Sensing Division, 4555 Overlook Ave SW, Washington, DC 20375, USA Universidad de Alcalá, Departamento de F́ısica y Matemáticas, Campus Universitario, E-28871 Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Spain Tel Aviv University, Sackler School of Physics & Astronomy, Ramat Aviv 69978, Israel Department of Astronomy, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California, 91125 USA Department of Astrophysics, Oxford University, Oxford OX1 3RH, UK Department of Physics, Rhodes College, Memphis, TN 38112, USA Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, 19 J.J. Far-infrared emission in luminous quasars accompanied by nuclear outflows

Combining large-area optical quasar surveys with the new far-infrared Herschel-ATLAS Data Release 1, we search for an observational signature associated with the minority of quasars possessing bright far-infrared (FIR) luminosities. We find that FIR-bright quasars show broad C iv emission line blueshifts in excess of that expected from the optical luminosity alone, indicating particularly power...

Herschel-ATLAS: the link between accretion luminosity and star formation in quasar host galaxies

We use the science demonstration field data of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey to study how star formation, traced by the far-infrared Herschel data, is related to both the accretion luminosity and redshift of quasars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the 2dF-SDSS luminous red galaxy (LRG) and Quasar Spectroscopic Catalogue survey. By developing a maxi...

Mid-infrared luminous quasars in the GOODS–Herschel fields: a large population of heavily obscured, Compton-thick quasars at z ≈ 2

We present the infrared (IR) and X-ray properties of a sample of 33 mid-IR luminous quasars (νL6μm ≥ 6× 1044 erg s−1) at redshift z ≈ 1–3, identified through detailed spectral energy distribution analyses of distant star-forming galaxies, using the deepest IR data from Spitzer and Herschel in the GOODS–Herschel fields. The aim is to constrain the fraction of obscured, and Compton-thick (CT,NH >...

Simulated Molecular Outflows in Galaxy Mergers with Embedded AGN

We study the effects of feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) on emission from molecular gas in galaxy mergers by combining hydrodynamic simulations that include black holes with a three-dimensional, non–local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) radiative transfer code. We find that molecular clouds entrained in AGN winds produce an extended CO morphology with significant off-nuclear emission...

High-resolution imaging of the molecular outflows in two mergers: IRAS 17208-0014 and NGC 1614⋆

Context. Galaxy evolution scenarios predict that the feedback of star formation and nuclear activity (AGN) can drive the transformation of gas-rich spiral mergers into (ultra) luminous infrared galaxies and, eventually, lead to the build-up of QSO/elliptical hosts. Aims. We study the role that star formation and AGN feedback have in launching and maintaining the molecular outflows in two starbu...
